Medium Bio:
Laurel MacQuarrie is a former special-needs teacher, who realized that she could reach out to more children as an author/illustrator than she could while being in the classroom. To date, she has published her first three books in her “The Misadventures of Seefus Slug” series. In addition to her publishing duties as the owner of Little Lamb Tales, she is also the mom to three sons and the step-mom to three daughters. She lives in Apollo Beach, FL with her husband, four children, and two dogs. Her website is located at www.seefus.com. Contact her at sales@seefus.com
Long Bio:
Laurel MacQuarrie graduated Magna Cum Laude in Psychology from The University of Maryland University College in 2008. She worked full-time at a USAF base in Germany so her three young sons could attend American schools, while she also took full-time classes. In between, she was able to take several different field studies in other countries such as in Italy, Spain, France, England, and Ireland.
After her graduation, she moved back to the United States and took more education based training to eventually become a special-needs teacher. It takes a tremendous amount of energy, patience, love, and understanding to be either a foster mom or to teach special-needs children. Laurel was born with a gift to connect with young adolescents and has a huge heart that breaks through even the thickest psychological walls. Her work with disadvantaged children and her success at reaching them inspired her to conceive and write her new series, The Misadventures of Seefus Slug.
Seefus and his story counterparts are all carefully hand-crafted out of clay. The background scenes are made out of variety of materials, usually from paper, wood, and plastic. Once the whole conglomeration of pieces are baked, glued and assembled together, a picture is taken. From there, its digitized contents are uploaded into the computer where Laurel can add more color and minute detail. The end product results in a much more 3-dimensional-looking illustration, far better than she could have managed with a drawing alone. Seefus and his family, as well as his cohorts are very humorous and unique to look at. As Laurel knows from experience, it’s often the off-the-wall, the misplaced, and the oddities in life that grab a child’s imagination and interest.
The series is rife with such attention-grabbing illustrations which follow equally provocative story lines. They are in fact, “social stories” which instill good values and behaviors (such as being respectful to your mother!). They are educational in nature and even have activity pages in the back of the books, as an aid for teachers. Happy families are ones that enjoy a close bond. Reading together is a timeless way of spending close-knit quality hours together that reinforce the very best nurturing qualities in us. It is with this goal in mind that propels Laurel to mold her clay and breathe life into the misadventures of Seefus series. If she can help just one family strengthen their family relationship by enjoying one of her books together, she knows that her time has been very well spent.
Laurel lives in Apollo Beach, FL. She is the mother to three sons as well as the step-mom to three daughters. She lives together with her husband, four children and two dogs.
